Mexico Counsel for Law Firms.

Co-counsel, referral partner, or behind-the-scenes consulting resource: Zapata Legal works with US and international firms on Mexico IP and corporate matters. Your client relationship stays exactly where it belongs.

THE GAP WE FILL

Most cross-border matters have a Mexico dimension that falls outside what US or international counsel can handle directly: an IMPI trademark filing, a Mexican entity for a joint venture, a distribution agreement that needs to hold up under Mexican law. The options are usually a generalist referral or leaving the client to find their own local counsel. Neither is a solution.

Zapata Legal fills that gap with the technical depth and professional discretion the relationship requires. We handle the Mexico side with full capability, keep you informed at every stage, and return the client to you when the matter is closed. No competition for the relationship. No ambiguity about who owns the client.

HOW WE WORK WITH FIRMS

Four ways to structure the relationship.

CO-COUNSEL

We work alongside your team on matters with a Mexico component. You manage the client relationship; we handle the Mexico-specific legal work. Full coordination, shared documentation, direct communication with your team throughout.

REFERRAL

For matters that are primarily Mexico-based, we accept client referrals with a clear understanding of the relationship: your client, your introduction, your ongoing connection. We do not solicit referrals in return, and we do not cross into your practice areas.

CONSULTING RESOURCE

For matters where you need a Mexico legal opinion without a full engagement, we provide written memos, second opinions, and jurisdiction-specific analysis on a consulting basis. Your name, your deliverable, our research.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES

For firms that prefer to maintain a single client-facing relationship, we work as a background resource: research, drafting, and strategic input delivered to your team, not directly to the client.

PRINCIPLES

  • Your client relationship is yours. The referred client is served exclusively in the agreed subject matter. Any other matter goes back to you.
  • No surprises on communication. Client contact protocols defined at the start of each matter. No uncoordinated communications.
  • Confidentiality. Professional obligation to the client and explicit commitment to the colleague.
  • Fees in writing before work begins. Fees and, where applicable, referral arrangements agreed in writing before accepting the matter. No ambiguity at the end.

The best time to align on how we work together is before a client needs it.
